El nudo en la garganta
Aunque parezca mentira, un asunto como el que enseguida será examinado es objeto de interés, todavía, para unos pocos integrantes obsoletos, puede decirse, del subconjunto alfabetizado de la población; resulta ser un dato saliente, si se piensa que la utilidad de ciertas inquietudes tangenciales no es, hoy, acá, un lugar común. Como sea, el atarearse en un tópico deceptivo es gratificante, o en todo caso sirve para exorcizar al demonio de la idea recurrente; por otro lado, es habitual escuchar que basta una buena dosis de espectáculos sin ambición para asegurarse un nombre, a lo que agregaría que también basta para desaparecer, que viene a ser lo mismo.
De las amplias extensiones cultivables del español, se parcelará respecto al vín-culo que establece la voz de un texto (de haber tal cosa, se me podrá decir, de tener ganas de que la haya, diría yo) con quienquiera que oiga, se intentará pro-fundizar en ciertos indicios ubicables entre la transcripción y el difundido, se expondrá por qué se considera que quien lee oye, que quien escucha lee, y se a-rriesgará el rescate y circunscripción de una práctica en entredicho; de ser po-sible, se valorará todo esto mediante apreciaciones.
Si se cuenta con una mente, lo que sigue puede figurarse: la hoz de una playa de piedra sin desmenuzar orillada por una lengua de silicio contra la que la crecida de un mar selenita insiste en incomodarse como un cangrejo imprudente que buscase agredir más y más cerca y donde los rescoldos de caparazones de berberechos calentados al sol durante el día menguante se incrustan en la piel de jóvenes in-dolentes y semidesnudos mientras arriba las nubes se oscurecen a semejanza de ciertos pájaros al desplumar; estaríamos en algún lugar impreciso de la Grecia Sesquicentenaria, en otro islote, haría un tiempo ya de esto, sería cuando los dioses habitaban en resquicios (no hay dios que no haya sido abyecto), cuando al-gunos de los angelitos de la jerarquía menor solían deleitarse en ser testigos mediatos de escenas ejemplares como ésta en la cual el creador (perdón por esta exageración) sometido a la disciplina del verso comunal ensaya en privado su obra de audición pura frente a los oídos extáticos de unas cuantas criaturas suficien-temente civilizadas; el grupo sería parte de un cuerpo social que adolecía de esta costumbre, común a su organización cívica, a la elaboración de un demos don-de se cantaban, ante jurados compuestos por ciudadanos sorteados que en cer-támenes convocados antes o después de las fiestas olímpicas o píticas o ístmicas habrían de premiarlas, las proezas de tal o cual héroe legítimo, la lírica de ocasión al vencedor; dos mil y pico de años después, es decir ahora, en el mismo sitio, y a la misma hora, una persona de sexo indefinible sentada en una playera de nylon a rayas releería en un idioma sin firmeza ciertas traslaciones, hipo-téticos versos, apócrifos de aquel artista legendario, la última edición crítica, el color local, el pulgar derecho de separador entre una página par y una impar, en la otra mano una pepsi, en el bronceado el turista, el visitador incompetente con pretensiones de, agarrate, agárrese, vivenciar; eventualmente puede proponer-se que, a pesar del desacierto de la simetría, este virtual homínido moderno sea la clase de sujeto que se considera un escritor, para ser preciso alguien que es-cribe poemas, y estudiar si se disuade de las impresiones genealógicas que ima-gina que lo vinculan a aquél. En fin, hasta aquí no se hizo más que un ejercicio de especulación (quiero decir, se inventó), pero voy a obligarme a creer que en efecto ciertos individuos hayan podido existir, que otros puedan estar existien-do.
Entre la realidad (o mejor, la interminable colección de sus garantías) de uno y otro mediaría, más que la historia siempre sintética del mundo y la de los reemplazos sucesivos de los medios técnicos e intelectuales ingeniados para tes-timoniarlo (o para deformar convenientemente un testimonio que no cuadre con la exégesis o la doctrina), la de las acepciones, la de la adecuación del signifi-cado al medio circundante, la de las relaciones de presión que se fueron haciendo lugar para que entre ellos algo siga preguntándose, que es la tarea.
Porque así como uno acaba de concebir, ni mal ni bien, que alguna vez el poeta, que de él se trata, no estuvo hecho (preparado, disciplinado, educado, convenci-do) para ser leído sino escuchado, así supone que hoy los términos se invirtie-ron, pero uno supone mal; hay que arriesgar, con cautela, que el lector de poesía existe, y que la poesía, se trate de lo que se trate, se difunde, o agoniza (en su mayor parte, por no asentar en su totalidad), a través de medios escritos, lo que no quiere decir que su audición, por gratuita que pueda ser considerada, no se invoque, en ocasión de cerrar filas en defensa del gremio, como atributo de su ser propio, sólo asible, justamente, por una descriptiva de sus atributos, sean los que fueren. Porque deja de advertirse, en estos diagnósticos regalados a mano alzada, la topografía, la diferencia angular entre lectura y recitado, entre audición y recreación, aquello que introduce, en esas actuaciones prestidigitadas que uno se habitúa a juzgar como meras interpretaciones, el elemento de una se-gunda, tercera y hasta cuarta fundamentación: la constante de reescritura, la es-critura constante.
Ahora puede detallarse, si cabe y por ilustrar un poco, el evento minúsculo que hoy sustituye (¿sustituye?, ¿cuáles serían, de serlas, las leyes y mutaciones de esta herencia?) al festival clásico, el mal llamado, en rioplatense, recital de poesía: hay un autor, la luz de un velador, una audiencia integrada por dos o tres familiares, varios cofrades en ejercicio, algún amigo, ciertos cofrades que son amigos, el que se apersona para presentar, la dueña de casa, el que pasaba por la puerta y entró, el público requerido para hacer número, el informado del asunto vía mail, un montón de sillas vacías, cuatro paredes, cinco, seis; el autor es una voz alta, el autor, esa voz alta, utiliza localismos que la incon-gruencia de los esclavistas y negreros más visibles confunde con lo dialectal (la ve es be larga, pronuncia la zeta como ese, la elle como y, conjuga la segunda persona del plural como una tercera, vosea), y sus facciones, las el autor, que-dan afuera del cono de luz raleada que se encarniza en el texto propio, y la voz alta descansa en pausas que le abren al silencio una ejecutividad; después de los aplausos muchas veces instrumentales, en un patio con macetas con plantas, rega-dos con un vinito aceptable adquirido a la vuelta por el anfitrión y manoteando en dos o tres bandejas de triples de miga, distribuidos en conjuntos de más de un elemento en razón de alguna charla que siempre conviene establecer, los asisten-tes hojean de parado, en oleadas, el texto propiamente dicho, es decir impreso, ahora expuesto a la venta en una mesa desmontable sin mantel, sin que fuerza pública ninguna los obligue a cerrar contrato, aunque se encuentre, en alguna que otra ocasión, el comprador oportuno.
Pasados seis párrafos, entre tanto interrogante sin formulación, cabría pregun-tar: ¿qué relación existe entre aquel concurso ritual mal documentado y estas em-parentadas prácticas meridionales deudoras acaso de su vocación, fuera de su co-mún paganismo intrínseco y su secularidad?; ¿qué razones formales (aunque no toda razón sea formal) nos inducen a rescatar la pertinencia de la escucha en vivo?; yendo más lejos, operada y hecha efectiva nomás la sustitución histórica (entre tantas otras desapariciones y metamorfosis) de la necesidad de aquella audición pura, dada la caducidad del carácter mnemotécnico del verso como transmisor de mensajes contenidistas (explotado todavía, eso sí, como una herramienta más que el capital exhibicionista perfecciona para multiplicarse, como una dimensión más de la construcción del sentido en la cultura de masas, como bien sabe por ejemplo el locador publicitario), ¿cuál es el mérito por el que esta rutina, diezmada o no, siempre mal predicha, tal vez en extinción, todavía perdura?; ¿por qué se es-tima valioso el desenvolvimiento oral, la gimnasia del recitado de poemas por parte de su autor frente a un público?; y en rigor: ¿en qué consiste?; finalmen-te, pero no menos importante: ¿quién dice que se estima valioso el desenvolvi-miento oral, la gimnasia del recitado de poemas por parte de su autor frente a un público?.
No te apartes, no se aparte, intuí la penetración de la pregunta, intúyala, y, antes de responder, puntualizá o puntualice conmigo.
Primero
Extremando la simplificación, siendo didáctico, puede decirse que todo autor se sirve de ciertos elementos del lenguaje, que se supone que es propiedad común del grupo lingüístico al que pertenece, para la escritura o producción de un texto; el texto sería el resultado tangible de esa producción, y de ser publicado se agregaría como elemento a la propiedad común del lenguaje (que el elitismo bien-pensante restringe como acerbo cultural); el lector se serviría de ese texto para la producción de una lectura, que podría o no agregarse como elemento intangible a la propiedad común del lenguaje, según fuera incorporada en el sujeto que la efectuase como una nueva herramienta cognitiva o expresiva; escritura y texto de-finirían respectivamente al proceso y resultado del primer tipo de producción, y por lectura se entendería tanto el proceso como el resultado de la segunda.
Por otro lado si uno se concentra, si se tiene la paciencia descriptiva y el ape-go al inventario del botánico, se consigue agremiar a los elementos constitutivos del plano fonético del lenguaje en un par de subconjuntos (lo que es hablado y lo que de lo hablado, según se sabe, puede transcribirse, que es todo), y ordenarlos sobre una recta a partir de su disposición a un lado u otro de cierto cero cuya explicitación, si la hubiera, tomaría, encima, demasiado trabajo, lo que no tiene mayor importancia pero permite dilucidar la naturaleza biyectiva de sus corres-pondencias: a cada componente del repertorio de sonidos o conjuntos de sonidos articulados que se ligan entre sí mediante determinadas fracciones del silencio le corresponde otro componente del repertorio de registros gráficos de esos soni-dos y silencios, a cada palabra escrita le corresponde una pronunciación, a cada pausa un signo de puntuación específico (entre los cuales el espacio mismo sería uno). Así como no se duda de la literalidad estricta de tales elementos (ni de la correspondencia unívoca entre respectivos, por más que paronomasia y afines emba-rren con excepciones la cancha), se cree que muchos de ellos refieren con mayor o menor éxito las características ideales o sensibles de lo que se supone que es el mundo, es decir significan, es decir versionan por medio de aproximaciones no siempre asintóticas cuyas decantaciones más extendidas se encuentran enumeradas en objetos (si se me disculpa que sea tan categórico al respecto) más o menos ex-haustivos denominados diccionarios, léxicos o vocabularios, cuadraturas de círcu-los para pasearse sin salir de casa.
De lo antedicho puede inferirse que así como la inteligibilidad, por ejemplo, ne-cesita prescribir determinadas ordenaciones para disponer los elementos de cada uno de los subconjuntos referidos en sucesión (aunque no pueda asegurarse que una determinada sucesión sea inteligible), la ingeniería musical del lenguaje hace que esa biyectividad entre elemento y elemento de uno y otro subconjunto esté so-breentendida, sea pasada por alto y asimilada, fuera tal o cual su ordenación, signifique o no; que es lo mismo que decir que ahí donde la prosodia es prac-ticada (a través de permutaciones automáticas entre lo escrito y el habla), la semántica se medita (para terraplenar la pista contra la que la palabra se estre-lle, para ganarle metros inundables a lo que busca decirse). Muy bien, es una i-dea.
Acá va otra, retomando el primer inciso después de esta última digresión, que ya se retomará: se puede discernir que entre el autor y la escritura hay todo tipo de relaciones (incluso las indiscernibles) y puede discernirse que entre el texto y el lector existen otras tantas relaciones (discernibles o no), pero no se dis-cierne que deba haber, entre el autor y el lector, relación alguna; el texto no es el puente que vadea la distancia entre autor y lector, sino la pared asertiva ante la cual cada uno embiste desde lados opuestos. Y es que los combates corres-pondientes que entablan con sus propias producciones son de signo diferente: el primero con la generación (espontánea, si se quiere, de un ecosistema, si se quiere), el crecimiento edilicio y el ordenamiento de una región inaugural, la mejoría de las técnicas de riego, la interrupción y el abandono de las obras, la invasión del climaterio, etcétera, el segundo con el doblaje y la legislación de lo dado, el aprovechamiento menesteroso de recursos ya existentes y dispuestos, la imposibilidad de in(ter)vención, el derecho al uso, la vialidad según la nor-ma, etcétera.
Me refiero, claro (porque queda claro, ¿no?), a la inferencia verbal de un texto, a la reseñada literalidad de su temperamento vocal. El que hace una pared, el que se hace de los materiales para hacerla en el mercado, el albañil que los reor-dena, la revoca, decide pelar un sector, dejarla así, rematarla con dientes de vidrio; el que se encuentra con una pared y atina a preguntarse qué habrá del o-tro lado, o le clava un clavo para colgar año tras año el calendario Michelin. De lo que se puede hacer cuando uno se encuentra con una pared, de lo que no, acto seguido.
El entendido fundamental sobre el que se sustenta cualquier acto de lectura es la deliberación de lo que está escrito, la índole intencional de lo dispuesto en una página; más que de la investigación de hasta qué punto exista cierta reposición de estímulos posibles entre sujetos inmanentes no vinculables (llámesela signifi-cación, llámeselo sentido, sean o no una y otro sinónimos, sea que el autor com-ponga un itinerario concienzudo para montañistas o prefiera la concisión de un tobogán para criaturas de arenero), de lo que se trata es de remarcar la natura-leza cristalizada del texto, la admisión por parte del lector de su carácter de acabado (lo que no quiere decir que acepte su condición, discutible, de cosa he-cha: de las obras, para hacer un comentario conciso o no tanto acerca del primer tipo de producción por más que no incumba o justamente por eso, de las labores que el humano insiste en engendrar, de cualquiera de ellas, puede decirse que más que terminarse se dan por terminadas, ocurrencia que no hace más que ocultar con elegancia un eufemismo utilizado para salir del paso, para legalizar un estado identitario del que alimentarse, ya que suponer la inconclusión como categoría descriptiva de toda tarea sería consentir la desaparición de la autoría, del au-tor en sí, con su consecuente oportunidad de mostrarse o no vanidoso al estampar una firma), de su factura escrita, dicho esto para redundar; esta factura es en-tonces, porque no puede ser otra cosa, taxativa.
Más allá de los juicios que sobre el texto con el que se enfrenta pueda abrir (al cabo todo escrito, ya sea por exceso, por defecto o por ausencia, trabaja con to-dos los niveles de la lengua, y hacer impugnaciones parciales en base a disiden-cias manieristas es inscribir la esclerosis individuada del yo donde no hace fal-ta, aunque resulte necesario) y más allá, incluso, del gusto o disgusto que pueda tenerle (y si se disfrutase del paréntesis podría discutirse si en esta escala de aversiones cada gusto equivale a un juicio, si no puede hablarse, al contrario, de que los gustos afirman en ciertas intimidades de premeditada inconciencia cu-yas resultantes inutilizan al juicio como juez), no está entre las prerrogativas del lector el reemplazar tal o cual adjetivo, el suprimir esta redundancia o exa-cerbarla, el agregar o desagregar ilación donde no la hubiera, donde sí, y menos aún, o menos todavía, o al menos todavía (y éste es el asunto), el omitir o modi-ficar las referidas pautas, aquéllas con las que la pronunciación se desentiende de que se la discuta: el convenio que se suscribe (de palabra, valga el humoris-mo) entre las partes lo obliga a ceñirse a lo dado, a las cláusulas del papel.
Sospechar que aquel contemporáneo hubiera optado por disfrutar de ciertas activi-dades náuticas abandonando el ejemplar de literatura ejemplar junto a la playera no sorprendería, y es que, se diga lo que se diga, ningún texto necesita un lec-tor; lo que necesita es que, de haberlo, se comprometa a dejarse evangelizar por sus vicisitudes, por la discrecionalidad literal que los trazados de tinta sobre un papel imponen sobre su propia escucha, gracias a los cuales y a la cual deberá consentir, lo quiera o no, ser atravesado por la distancia que lo separa de la significación más pertinente (cualquiera sea, elaborada no importa cómo, ésa de la que se dijo tanto que mejor no decir nada), de la que no habrá nada que decir. En este sentido tal o cual prosa, ese poema, aquel lema priápico estampado con cal viva en la pared del cementerio, todo conjunto de signos escritos es una par-titura, un plan de ejecución particular basado en la existencia de tales signos y no otros, y es por eso mismo que no admite interpretación alguna: el que lee no interpreta, no hay nada que pueda ser interpretado, no existe un intérprete; el texto es un repertorio de variables independientes que la cognición aplica sobre la respiración (o mejor, sobre la reproducción imaginada de la respiración), un código de estímulos y respuestas para probarse al caminar sobre las cuerdas voca-les, un inventario de señalizaciones, un balizado; el tránsito a través del texto es la reconversión de una industria en otra, el recorrido detallado de instruc-ciones que retraducen símbolos gráficos a respectivos agudos y graves labiales o fricativos a respectivas velocidades, integradas en un sistema vocal reflejo; es la voz del texto lo que suena en uno cuando lee (a propósito, la distinción entre voz alta y baja no pasa de ser un prurito de utilidad apenas doméstica, un tecni-cismo convenientemente infantil seleccionado para fundar una divisoria de aguas entre la vibración eficaz de un filamento delgado como un hilo de coser trenzado con algunos miles de células amontonadas provocada por el paso del aire espirado y el reflujo del escandido mental; todo texto en contacto con un lector es una audición, y al respecto muchas veces resulta casi decepcionante descubrir que, de no interceder un conocimiento personal del autor, la coloración tímbrica que se le asigna es la que el propio lector piensa que tiene, o pensaba que tenía antes de escucharse, por caso, en la grabadora de mensajes telefónicos de un contesta-dor mal ensamblado), y esa voz no encuentra más alternativa que ejecutar el pro-grama rítmico intrínseco en el texto. En esta ejecutoria tonal, a diferencia de cualquier interpretación, no destella más personalidad que la del texto mismo.
Toda obra escrita es el descubrimiento de un habla, y no hay habla que no caiga dentro del conjunto de formas expresivas verbales de que dispone una comunidad de personas que se entienden entre sí, una lengua; la escrupulosidad taxidérmica con la que se mide el intervalo entre lo escrito y lo hablado impide que se anote que son un mismo fenómeno, gemelos de un solo cigoto, que los recursos fonéticos de los que se dispone (y sus transcripciones: la palabra, el punto, la coma, el a-cento, la diéresis, el diptongo, el corte de verso, los puntos suspensivos, pun-tos suspensivos) son de uso común, y que ese uso precipita según una genealogía que hace innecesaria la invención de fórmulas nuevas. Por más que se nos enseñe que en una buena ortografía ni todas las pausas con las que se modula el lenguaje hablado se transcriben en el escrito ni todas las representadas en este último se hacen siempre en el primero, o que se nos quiera convencer de que en éste se ha-cen numerosas pausas cuyo objeto es subrayar o dar un tono especial a la palabra o expresión que precede o dar un reposo a la voz después de una locución larga en sitios en que la colocación de una coma escrita constituiría falta (si el hijo preguntase si la ortografía real y la formal existen por separado, ¿qué debería respondérsele?), hay que alertarse e insistir en que tales normativas resaltan la divergencia de medios cuando de lo que se trata es de asumir la transferencia de equivalentes entre dos aspectos de un único cuerpo principal, cuando la cuestión es que en ambos casos lo que se entiende por una pausa específica es elucidado convencionalmente, que por ejemplo una coma equivale siempre a tal pausa, que esa pausa se representa siempre con una coma.
Ahora bien, acá se puede hacer una distinción (para saciar el apetito de los con-clusivos, de los que necesitan redondear los decimales): así como el empleo de un signo de puntuación (de una palabra dada, de una sintaxis, de cada uno de los accidentes sonoros de una enunciación) por parte de un escritor es siempre un e-jercicio de arbitrariedad (de la cual se nutre la noción de estilo, de cuyo ser puede dudarse o no, pero no quiero amedrentarte, perdón, amedrentarlo, con más trama inútil), la apreciación de tales signos por parte del lector es una falta de albedrío; esta falta de autonomía es el precio que se cobra el texto, y la de-liberación de la que se habló la moneda en que se paga; hay una relación inver-samente proporcional entre aquel activo de arbitrariedad autoral y este pasivo de apreciación lectora.
Segundo
Se habla español, se escribe en español, el español existe, el castellano es una precisión peninsular; regiones enteras del planeta hacen uso del español, una do-cente adocenada exigiría que sus hastiados alumnos las fueran sombreando con un marcador azul de metileno sobre la división política de un planisferio elemental para argumentar a favor de cierta hegemonía de superficie, y a pesar de que pro-piamente aquellos usos sean propios de cada pueblo y hasta apropiables, a pesar de que incluso se los pueda individualizar, el suelo común es un acuerdo tácito entre habitantes de un mismo organismo al que se le van haciendo cirugías correc-tivas imperceptibles.
Que el organismo del español es uno solo lo prueba, no qué tanta intención tribu-taria demuestre cada uno de esos usos de achicar distancia respecto al verbo ma-dre, sino el hecho de que tal distancia exista, e incluso de que se la busque am-pliar. En efecto, es el ansia de la distinción la que nos inflinge nuestras me-jores cicatrices, y son estas cicatrices las que nos sitúan en un cuerpo; no es hundiéndose el cuchillo más hondo que uno va a librarse de él, sino perfeccionan-do, con ese mismo cuchillo, algún cuerpo recíproco. El denominador común de todas las variaciones de la línea melódica (la autoafirmación inconsecuente pero im-plícita del que arrastra, por ejemplo, la pronunciación de la ch) es el localis-mo, y todo localismo no funda (en tanto no termine de resolverse por la indepen-dencia revolucionaria de lo dialectal, que en español no existe, que no se adivi-na que alguna vez exista) más que una deuda, una colonia de herbívoros alimenta-dos por una sola fotosíntesis.
Como pretendo inyectar un poco de peso constitucional (a riesgo de exponerme a alguna risa sarcástica, o por qué no para inducirla) en todo esto que vengo insi-nuando, y sintiendo en la nuca el aliento de los cuadros que se masturban ante la letra siempre que sea célebre, transcribo, cito, pongo palabras de otro en mi bo-ca: “Se dice que el español es una lengua fonética y se quiere decir con ello que cada signo escrito corresponde con precisión a un sonido y que éstos no se des-vían o lo hacen con una desviación apenas perceptible para los no especialistas, del sonido fundamental del signo correspondiente. (…) En cada palabra pronun-ciada aisladamente hay siempre una sílaba acentuada; en español, las graves están en mayoría (con gran desproporción respecto de las otras) circunstancia a la que se atribuye, en parte, la particular gravedad y equilibrio de este idioma. (…) El acento de las palabras aisladas no constituye una dificultad en la lectura del idioma, pues obedece a reglas fijas y sencillas y las excepciones de estas reglas se marcan en la escritura con acento ortográfico. (…) La dificultad (…) puede estar (…) en la acentuación de la frase, en la de los artículos, ciertos adje-tivos y adverbios, en la de las preposiciones y conjunciones, ya que unas veces tienen acento propio y otras veces son enclíticas o proclíticas (para todo lo cual no deja de haber reglas). (…) Puede afirmarse en términos generales que la pronunciación española presenta pocas dificultades, debido principalmente a la pureza de sus vocales; (las variaciones en la pronunciación de las mismas) son tan pequeñas que no puede hablarse de vocales intermedias o mixtas como en otros idiomas. (…) Hay que señalar como peculiaridad del español que en la pronuncia-ción de varias vocales seguidas las cuerdas vocales no interrumpen su vibración sino que la mantienen mientras se pasa suavemente de una a otra. Este carácter se completa con la tendencia general a pronunciar en una sola sílaba las vocales que van seguidas y a pronunciar como una sola las vocales iguales contiguas. (…) Una característica de la pronunciación española es que las consonantes explosivas no son tan bruscas como en otros idiomas. (…) (Particularidades en español) de la línea tónica en el grupo fónico: 1º, que, salvo en el caso de que la primera sílaba sea acentuada, empieza siempre en tono grave; 2º, el interior del grupo fónico se mantiene uniforme con ligerísimas alteraciones que, generalmente, se marcan por una elevación de tono en las sílabas acentuadas y una depresión en las que no lo son; 3º, el final del grupo fónico es una elevación, si el grupo no es final de periodo o es interrogativo, y una depresión desde el acento de la pa-labra en que se concentra intencionadamente la expresión, si el final o es excla-mativo o imperativo.” Este rastreo puede profundizarse hasta poner el ojo en los rincones más aislados, buscando las grietas donde se aloje la hipotética fauna que pueda escapársele a la intransigencia, para encontrar que conviene encon-trarle la vuelta y acostumbrarse a que de vuelta el sargento llame a filas: “Las vocales finales inacentuadas son largas en pronunciación española, las conso-nantes finales ni demasiado largas ni marcadas.” Etcétera; más que de una precep-tiva voluntariosa, se trataría de cierto orden vitrificado por las valencias del empleo. Hay que aclarar que las cursivas se extrajeron del “Diccionario de Uso del Español”, por María Moliner (siendo minucioso, editorial Gredos SA, Sánchez Pacheco 81, Madrid, primera edición, y más minucioso, 19.a reimpresión, tomos I y II, 1994); el lector apasionado por la consecuencia que consulte (no es más que una recomendación) los artículos “derivación”, “ortografía”, “acento”, “pronun-ciación”, “composición de palabras”, “guión”, “puntuación” y el resto de los sus-tantivos que terminen en “ción”; resulta ser uno de los ejercicios más y mejor indicados para percatarse de que habría que leer todo el diccionario, una activi-dad alucinante, para enterarse de que la misma tampoco alcanza vaya uno a saber para qué.
Entonces, de toda esta fijación, sistematización y depuración de las normas con-sagradas por el uso del español para el usufructo y unión de sus elementos, ¿pue-de concluirse algo?: puede concluirse que incluso para el hablante (incluso para el hablado) el juego libre que pueda abrirse entre las piezas y componentes de cada mecanismo de la maquinaria del idioma se restringe a la inyección de acor-des, a la ampliación de un margen para maniobrar, a estrategias de intervención limitadas a trabajar sobre la mayor o menor sintonía en la adopción de tal o cual transitividad en el producto escalar entre sonido y grafía, a singularizar los pocos matices y la falta de inflexión con las que se nos disuade de intentonas radicales en la entonación; parafraseándome, para el español regiría una relación inversa entre la disciplina prosódica que impone y la flexibilidad de su caudal léxico (incluyendo la de la variedad de ordenaciones significantes que permite, por ejemplo, la recombinación de todas aquellas palabras que van de cualquier ma-yúscula a cualquier punto), siendo este último, dada la severidad de la primera, el campo a incrementar para enriquecer (si se quisiese, de encontrarla insufi-ciente, cuando resulte necesario, cabe agregar) el sinsentido de lo que se suele denominar el mundo (al que ya me referí y que usted y vos deben conocer, de un modo u otro), con la adquisición, podría proponerse, de por ejemplo una o dos veintenas de vocablos para especificar una gradación o diferenciar en las cuali-dades de un mismo fenómeno atmosférico, con la designación de especies para sus-tituir al género, tal como se supone que hacían algunos de nuestros ancestros (e-xagero, por supuesto, esta palabra, entre nosotros, no es más que nueve letras) indígenas antes de que, según el hábito de siempre, según nuestra saludable vocación por la pobreza, los exterminásemos.
Así que la situación parece consentir consistir en lo siguiente: la estructura-ción de los elementos fonemáticos del español sería de tal rigidez que resultaría harto improbable no verse involucrado, cualquiera sea el uso que se haga del i-dioma (y descartada la opción de no utilizarlo), dentro de un segmento de nor-mativas mal que bien inequívocas que se encarga de constreñir la composición y recomposición de estímulos entre sonidos (trascriptos o no), tanto más cuanto ma-yor (aventuro yo) sea la aspiración de desentenderse de ellas, cuanta más fuerza se haga para desanudarse; para vencer al español habría que cantarlo, y para can-tar hay quien dice que se requiere una malformación que ciertos fisiólogos han viviseccionado ya en sus ocasionales mesas de carpintero; podría especularse con que sólo quien domine con adecuada profundidad alguna otra lengua todavía no ex-tinta estará calificado para diagnosticar si el concepto es extensible a la misma (según acuerde con él) o explorar hasta dónde la inducción es conducente, pero no es mi caso.
Bueno, suficiente, basta de esto, el resto: que se pierda.
Los santos que se hincan ante la voz alta del autor porque suponen que hay textos que merecen recitarse, el paciente prosternado invocando la faca testimonial para mutilarse, el imputable que encuentra conveniente convocar a una actriz de repar-to que le corresponda para convencerse de que el texto se dice sin que se lo di-ga, todos equivocados.
Tercero
En efecto, efectivamente: si se dice, como digo, que ante el texto, el lector, el autor mismo que se lo reencuentra, debe, tiene que someterse, ejecutarlo en tanto partitura; si se dice, como digo, que decir sometimiento es aludir a la recompo-sición sonora exacta que cada registro gráfico induce; si se dice, como digo, que esta recomposición viene esclarecida por el español en sí mientras se haga uso de él: ¿qué sentido tiene que sea el autor, y no cualquier otro, y no nadie, el que se presente a leer, ahíto y atontado, en auditorios, transeptos de iglesias evan-gelistas y metafóricas salas bautismales, el que se preste a ser grabado para que se lo reproduzca en aulas y penales o para que se lo comercialice (o para que se lo desgrabe y retranscriba, en el colmo), el que conceda ser la marioneta que su propio texto debe tolerar?.
Porque no hace falta estar muy despierto para asimilar que en realidad es esta pirotecnia de la exposición por la exposición misma la que desentumece algunos canales de difusión (¿acaso tanto o más escasos que la visibilidad que la poesía ha sabido conseguirse, de la cual se enorgullece, ante la cual se victimiza?), que muchos igualan el ser vistos con el que se los vea, que no siempre (o mejor dicho casi nunca) es cierto que la obra se las puede arreglar sin que se trabaje para que no tenga que arreglárselas; y acá entraría a tallar tanto comentario que no conviene agregar que mejor no agrego nada.
Ah, no, salta el alumno del profesorado creyendo retomar el hilo (o como él se regodea en repetir: volviendo al tema), con su apunte anillado y su resaltador y sus palabras numismáticas, regurgitadas, metidas entre la mentira de los dientes, humedecidas por las glándulas salivales, suponiendo poner el punto sobre la i, encantado con haber averiguado que en una lectura en público se performa; y en-tonces hay que explicarle por qué esto, por qué lo otro, por qué no. A ver.
La ambición de salvar la distancia entre el proceso de construcción de una obra y la obra como producto final de un proceso de construcción es inútil (y con este indicativo se pretende resolver el condicional del primer párrafo del punto pri-mero, precisando en aquello que aquella esquemática edificante no se preocupa por atender), no porque resulte inconsecuente cualquier arsenal analítico dado ni porque no se admita que en el fondo es esa misma reseñística (con sus permanentes pero inconstantes preguntas por la cosa) la que obstaculiza (en su afán expli-cativo, en su tendencia a tabular ejemplares en soluciones de continuidad para tener de dónde agarrar) que el disenso se encargue de diluirla, sino porque nues-tra propia fugacidad y contingencia constitutivas nos inducen a ir aprehendiendo a partir de cristalizaciones que estatuimos, porque precisamos estupidizarnos con el cuentito de la inmanencia (y es así que fijamos una esquemática, objetual, histórica o lo que sea) para simular que nos garantizamos no sólo de que el mundo exista sino de que alguna vez pertenecimos a él, entre tanta otra actividad cau-tiva del antropomorfismo más banal. A pesar de lo cual, para que la distracción camine lo suficiente, se siguen alegando combinaciones de palabras por ahora y sólo por ahora más o menos distinguidas; pero qué pasa: la mentada jerarquización del azar, el trabajo sobre los espectros de acción, el gesto vivo, el transgredir los hábitos anclados de la representación, la utilización de alternativas vali-dadas por la jerga crítica más ocurrente no sólo no demuestran (como querrían ha-cer) la eliminación de tal distancia sino que la resuelven por asimilación, ofre-ciendo el proceso mismo como producto, en el mejor de los casos, en vez de asumir la declarada inexistencia del último, que en un desarrollo lógico desembocaría en el horror del nombre propio: en el vacío de que no haya nada que ofrecer.
Como es la performance la que insiste en endilgarse (o consiente que se le endil-gue) el fardo de ese salto sin red, no viene mal que se caractericen, así sea en síntesis, algunos de los hitos de su sintomatología (aunque sin hacer mucho espa-mento, no vaya a ser que se me juzgue apresuradamente como parcial, cosa que me gustaría que se hiciera, ya que no hay manera de no serlo, después de cierta re-flexión), ahora que comparte con el canon, a pesar de la discreta marginalidad en la que gusta relegarse, los reglamentos y contravenciones como medio de expresión artística, a ver si el encantado entra en razón: el accionismo vienés, al que le cupo el establecimiento de un biotipo de aquello que debe ser una performance (la provocación del público a partir de la efectividad simbólica de un ritual de san-gre que recompondría frente a la sociedad industrializada el ligamen entre arte y vida mediante cierta transmisión o repercusión empática o catártica), impugnado por el carácter retrógrado de su sustrato teórico (el funcionalismo social, la fiesta como desorden que por contraste legitima el orden), por su artificialidad (al practicarse desligado del complejo de factores sociales en los que, antropo-logía mediante, se supone que arraigaba el ritual) y su teatralización al cuadra-do (el simulacro de un estereotipo disfrazado de real), en fin, por la ingenuidad tendenciosa de considerar a lo brutal e hiriente como reemplazo vanguardista de nociones clásicas (la obra como unidad cerrada, los presupuestos anclados bajo la capa de la grandilocuencia); la tradición (norte)americana, impugnada también, por circunscribirse como espectáculo a medio camino entre lo teatral y la danza; y más allá de toda escolasia: la escenificación de un discurso plástico en el que el cuerpo es la clave de la información visual (a pesar de que la elucubración sobre el mismo se ha convertido en un sujeto básico de muchas otras producciones artísticas), la búsqueda de especificidad como lenguaje en la condición de exis-tencia de cierta acción o actitud del artista (una vía directa al paroxismo), su espurio enfrentamiento a la primacía del objeto (oculto en el eufemismo de la in-tervención como gesto efímero más allá de su fijación documental o su posible re-petición), etcétera, etcétera.
Anótese que para cada una de estas manifestaciones, incluso para todas, sigue ri-giendo aquella oferta de producto (disimulada de proceso e intensificada hasta e-xasperarse, como demuestra el intento de evitar que aquél se convierta en mer-cancía haciéndolo perecedero), en el cual no se tiene mejor idea que terminar por caer no sin antes, claro, emitir algún aullido mal disimulado para la prensa.
La complejidad de una definición no solventa la necesidad de hacerla, se escucha en algunas academias que expiden títulos oficiales para el nivel terciario (quie-ro creer que podrían referirse al hecho de que todavía ningún cráneo haya defi-nido a satisfacción el concepto de performance, falta que no por habitual dejaría de sentirse como indigerible en el epicentro de esos círculos viciosos); recién entonces uno entiende la virulencia con la que ciertos anestesistas se defienden de no tener nada que decir, mientras se dirigen de incógnito al diccionario para cerciorarse de que hicieron buen uso de la palabra “solventa”, alarmándose por no encontrarla.
En definitiva, impugnadas las impugnaciones, tranquilizados los que precisan en-cuadrarse en constelaciones de instrucción, se trata de diferenciar entre la paja y el trigo, no de determinar lo que de trigo tiene la paja: no es que el autor (en tanto lector en público de su propia obra) no performe porque ofrece un pro-ducto acabado sino porque no hay producto ni cosa ni sustantivo ni sinónimo ni nada que ofrezca, porque lo que hace es proceder; el autor (en tanto lector en público de su propia obra) se ve obligado a seguir procediendo, a uncirse al yugo de encontrar lo que se quiere decir mientras se dice algo, a orbitar en torno a los rescoldos que respiren, todavía, debajo de la capa de ceniza; es por eso que se pone a discutir con la norma positiva de lo que está escrito, de ahí que ejer-za siempre una tergiversación sobre la taxatividad (que él sabe tentativa) de sus propios resultados, de los cuales todo lo que puede saber es que “traducen, con mayor o menor pérdida, absurdos y misteriosos empujes hacia la imagen, que son más o menos adecuados en relación a oscuras tensiones internas” (según me dijo un amigo que lo leyó que decía Beckett), porque se ve impelido a prolongar, le guste o no, la traducción de esos empujes, que la ocasión de la lectura recrea, al in-ducirlo a retomar el texto en el cual trabaja, por el cual es trabajado, contra el cual, acaso, hubiera creído romper lanzas.
Por último
No leer en público otra cosa que material embrionario, es una consigna, es todo lo que se tiene; leer, a lo sumo, bajo la suela de los dos o tres pasos que fal-tan para caer rendido, en el eclipse del ciclo productivo, ahí donde el estertor del perfeccionamiento y coronación del texto se confunde con la repulsión que se le empieza a tener y el riesgo pasa a ser no desprenderse a tiempo de lo que, se-gún uno se convence, no admite más corrección que aquella que arruine finalmente todo.
La tergiversación del borrador tipeado en word o de las pruebas de impresión o de los manuscritos del cuaderno espiralado, mejor dicho, la oportunidad de situar al oyente frente a la afinación de la última palabra, frente a la fase de enfria-miento de la vibración expresiva adecuándose todavía a la tensión interna, es condición necesaria y suficiente para una lectura en público; el escriba super-numerario se somete a ser visitado en trance de escribir (o lo que es lo mismo, bajo los efectos de la inercia creativa de haber escrito), y toma a cambio una lección, altera, corrige, arbitra adónde ensayar esta o aquella modificación, ad-mite o no la última enmienda apurada antes de salir del cascarón, se desentiende, incluso, de aquella cartografía (y es en el empleo y usufructo de toda una elas-ticidad permisiva respecto de ella en donde acredita que a diferencia de cual-quier intérprete innecesario, dada la constitución física inoperable del cuerpo textual, tenga que ser él ese a quien se necesita convocar, invitar, congregar), según le convenga al empuje o ajuste que él siente que la imagen todavía soli-cita; y no es que se trate sólo de un privilegio que se decida o no a poner en juego, es que no tiene más alternativa que seguir siendo fiel a esa requisitoria circunstancialmente interrumpida. Por eso, porque tiene que saber que el recitado es la escuela más reciente y es el último taller y por aquello que tampoco sabe, por todo esto justifica un público, al cual ninguna otra propaganda, siempre que no se deje manipular por el equívoco premeditado por los interesados en ampliar planteles vegetativos de seudo próceres ocupados en el servicio y apuntalamiento de su propia perplejidad, debería disuadir.
En este contexto, ya que no hay otro, ya que ningún otro es admisible, es impo-sible que un autor lea mal, es improbable que un autor lea bien, puesto que no lee, puesto que no es leer lo que hace. En este contexto la presentación de un libro (con todo su abolengo de pastel y torta frita ganándole por varias cuadras a cualquier otra verbigracia) puede ser confortable, está bien, y hasta atendible en tanto se quiera hacer un poco de ruido en las calabazas de la audiencia, pero no deja de ser una redundancia.
Es decir que hay que evitar prestarse a la neurastenia del medio, hay que señalar la insensatez irreflexiva de ciertas desatenciones, hay que sospechar del verso del tío, hay que poner las bolas en remojo. Desde ya que los especialistas en presentaciones en vivo pretenderán poder performar un accionar poético (que a lo mejor nadie más querrá impugnarles) decidido a acceder a esa abstracción que se conoce como masividad, se sentirán con derecho a emitir mensajes orales en cons-tante transformación para afirmar su convicción en la ampulosidad de ciertas fal-sas categorías como el inacabamiento de las obras, propondrán que la improvi-sación también forme parte de la estructura literaria, harán del versionar una opción de lucha consuetudinaria contra la distribución de volúmenes englobados en registros de propiedad intelectual; desde ya que habrá quien aproveche las ven-tajas de una adecuada relación pública, lo convocante de una pluma en el cande-lero, y asista con calculada impuntualidad a cuanto convite se le haga, sobre to-do si lo enteran de los indudables vítores del sexo opuesto, para sobarse el ego o ampliar el palmarés, que es otro ego. Pero no porque no pueda calificárselos de intentos fallidos dejan de impresionar como esos zarpazos silábicos diseñados pa-ra distraer la cartera de la dama y el bolsillo del caballero, ni, por mucho ma-drugar, amanece.
Entonces, ante la muletilla del autor, el espectador conscripto a la ejecución verbal debería optar, o bien por el recorrido personal de esa instantánea del hartazgo, del renunciamiento a seguir hincando en un cuerpo múltiple con más y más procedimientos (esto es, el texto, que se basta a sí mismo, que no amerita más timbres que los que uno deduce de su producto vectorial), o bien por la visi-tación ocasional a ese reducto con veladores donde sucesivas cajas craneales se someten con honestidad al escrutinio de sus verdades; entonces, ante el estribi-llo de la lectura en público, el autor debería declinar los éditos, dejar que lo editado se condene a que alguien lo recorra, o tener la decencia de exponerse con algún tanteo al que desnudar, al que terminar de adiestrar, al que ofrecerle al-guna manipulación (esa misma que escucha que le pide) que pase por alto sus mar-cas y mojones, que corrija las disonancias o las aproveche, que adultere para rectificar.
Pasada la referida inercia de haber escrito el desprendimiento de la publicación suele inscribir en la propiedad común del lenguaje las marcas de una escritura osificada (la obra como resultado de una cristalización del estado tensional es-tablecido entre el autor y su producción), y señala el punto a partir del cual ambos señalan en direcciones diferentes, aducen caminos por separado; en adelan-te, autor y texto podrán converger, incluso reunirse, pero nunca coincidirán: el que piensa que es el mismo que era entonces ahora es otro, es ese otro que embis-te la cal viva escupida contra las paredes, que podría decidirse a embestirlas, a éstas, que si las embistiese, que se da cuenta de que eso es una pared de mam-puestos que lo devuelven a un suelo requemado con fertilizantes, ése de donde es usual que se arranque, que se tenga que arrancar. Que tome nota el aquejado por la versión definitiva, el que reedita con intervenciones, el que se admira del finado que cuarenta y seis (46) años más tarde, al anunciarse en una Obra Com-pleta, optaba por mitigar el exceso barroco, limar asperezas, tachar sensiblerías y vaguedades.

When my daughter was 4 she began having seizures, I had to monitor her temperature every hour. The mercury thermometer was the most accurate but you cannot buy them anymore. I did not want to traumatize her any more than I had to so I didn’t want to use the rectal mercury thermometer that often so I had my hubby go out and buy the digital oral and the ear thermometer. I tested all 3 the first 2 hours and the difference was astounding. The ear thermometer was off by a degree or more and the oral was the closest and most consistant to the mercury. I decided to stick with the mercury thermometer because it was the most accurate. If you can get your hands on one, do so, otherwise I’d suggest going with the digital.
